Loose Misgivings

Loose Misgivings
My vessels explore the fluidity of the human form. The body isn’t static. Within the course of a day it stretches, bloats, consumes, and excretes. The control we do exert is in competition with the wills of the world around us. As much as I shape myself, the world does touch back. When I look at myself I often see imprints of those all around me, a family member, a friend, a stranger, and find that I am tangled in the collective act of living.
The body is impressionable and relies upon external experiences and internal reactions. In a similar sense, the ceramic vessel is dependent upon the outward forces of creation and the imbuement of spirit through transformation occurrences. I am interested in the treatment of the external, in such that the texture I create encompasses a landscape of growth; a similar curiosity stems from the assumption of internal space, how can shape inform a given structure.
Change is inherent in the nature of clay, from the literal mutability of the material in its raw state to the countless trials and rituals in the ceramics process. In clay change is tangible. As I sculpt, I listen to the clay and it breathes through my fingers, building as it buckles. I accentuate cavities and curves to entice an organic movement in which bodily essences flow. I seek to capture a life force born from the grand collection of elements and forces present in ceramics.
Ceramic and glaze.
